New Findings About the Ketogenic Diet   Leave a comment

For this post I thought I would share a few new things they’ve discovered in the last year about the ketogenic diet.  For some of these things the science isn’t by any means settled, but research at least has been done and the results are believed to be true at this point.

The Ketogenic Diet may be anti-aging:  Researchers at the Gladstone Institute have discovered that the ketogenic diet can have the same anti-aging effects that are seen in calorie restricted diets.  The benefits in a calorie restricted diet come from the creating of β-hydroxybutyrate (βOHB).  However, the ketogenic diet is also able to create βOHB without the need for calorie restriction.  That’s because βOHB is a ketone.  The creation of βOHB helps to combat oxidative stress which helps slow the aging process.  For a more detailed explanation please consult the article below.

The Ketogenic Diet is muscle sparing:  A lot of people are under the misconception that you just can’t put on muscle with the ketogenic diet.  Not only is it possible to put on extra muscle, it’s actually more difficult to lose muscle while in ketosis.  The key to whether or not you put on the muscle is your protein intake.  So even if you’re running lower than you should on protien it’s good to know that at least this isn’t going to cause you to back track muscle wise.

The Ketogenic Diet is good for protecting the brain:  It seems that the ketogenic diet is capable of reducing beta-amyloid.  Beta-amyloid protein, when it sticks together, causes the blockages that lead to Alzheimer’s disease.  Being on the ketogenic diet helps to increase the removal of beta-amyloid proteins, leading to a better functioning brain.  Especially as it ages.

The Ketogenic Diet is good for the eyes as well:  Glaucoma is a disease where the cells that send the images to the brain become damaged, reducing the quality of your vision.  Researchers at Northeast Ohio Medical University found that maintaining a ketogenic lifestyle increased energy production to the retinal cells at the back of the eye, decreasing the chance of damage, in patients with glaucoma.

It’s important to keep in mind a lot of this is early findings.  And further research needs to be done on all four topics.  But it seems that every day we learn more about the benefits of the ketogenic diet, beyond the amazing weight loss and increased energy.

So even if you already are at a good body weight, there are many more reasons to start, and continue to live, a ketogenic lifestyle.  I’ll post more when new research comes out.  Have a great day.

Interview Results   2 comments

So I did hear back from them today.  The guy who called was not one of the ones who interviewed me.  He told me I wasn’t chosen for the job at this time.  There was some good news in it.  While I had went to the open interview based on a news blurb on a local TV station, I hadn’t really gotten a chance to look at a job listing.  So I did have some questions that I wasn’t able to ask in the format of the interview I went to.

I know the company will put out another notice for hiring soon, so this time I will get to read the notice.  The notice will hopefully answer my questions.

The other bit of good news is that while I was turned down, the guy who called did offer this information.  The ones who did interview me had told him to make sure to tell me that I should keep an eye on their Facebook page.  I should do this because they would be having another job fair/interview session soon.  They told him to pass along that I should definitely come back and interview again.

I don’t remember exactly the words the gentleman used, but I was definitely left with the impression that if I came back again the next time they were hiring, I would be getting a job.  Might be reading into it, or hearing what I want to hear, but it’s just how it sounded to me.

The big thing about the whole situation is that, while I of course would have liked to hear that I got the job, I didn’t react negatively to the news.  I accepted that I hadn’t been chosen, and that there was likely a good reason at this time for that.  I’m doing better at realizing things happen for a reason.  I don’t always get to know the reason, but there is a reason.

So I will continue to do some job hunting.  I got a new application in today.  I still have a couple of outstanding applications for jobs nearby where I already work.  So, despite today’s bad news, things feel like they’re moving in the right direction.  As I get more news on my job hunting journey I’ll post it here.  So for now, I’ll bid you a good day, and I’ll see you soon.

New YouTube Video Up   3 comments

I have a new YouTube vlog up about cheat days on the ketogenic diet.  I’d love it if you could listen to the whole video and tell me what you think.  Do you agree with me?  Do you disagree?  If so, I’d love to hear what you think.  Like and subscribe on YouTube if you’re so inclined.  Coming up this week I’m going to start doing product reviews.  I know in the past I’ve mentioned I was an Amazon Affiliate.  That isn’t the case at the moment.  These will be reviews of products I use regularly and like.  If you purchase them I make no financial gain or compensation of any kind.  I’m just telling you what I like about the product.  So without further ado, here is the video:

Today’s Interview   2 comments

Well, I won’t get to know how it went until tomorrow but I feel it went well. This was definitely the most interesting format I’ve interviewed under.

We all met in the same room at first. They explained to everyone the process and that they wouldn’t notify everyone of how they did until tomorrow. This was to insure a fair shot for everybody. They had another group coming in later today and they, quite fairly, didn’t want them to be out of luck before they even arrived.

The format for the interview was simple, just unusual. We were divided into a smaller group and taken into a separate room. Then, going around the table, each candidate was brought forward to be interviewed by the three member panel.

It was much more informal than any interview I’d done in the past. The three guys would give you a chance to tell about yourself and why you were interested in working there. Then based on your answers they’d ask for clarification on points you’d made. It was more of a chat than an interview. I rather liked doing it that way. It was just a little different having other applicants in the room. After you were interviewed you could leave. It was pretty quick.

I feel I did well. I felt comfortable in the format. The three guys were really nice. I’d definitely like to work for them. Best of all it wasn’t the usual pat interview.

I’ll be called tomorrow. If I’m accepted for the job I’ll notify my current employer and will be able to tell you either way tomorrow night. So until then have a great day. See you soon.

Weigh In 11/27/2018   Leave a comment

Sorry for the delay.  My brother is visiting from Alaska so my schedule is a little off.  But I wanted to make sure to get my weekly update on my progress posted.

This past week is of course the week that Thanksgiving occurred in.  I took my day off from keto for this month for Thanksgiving so I was prepared in advance to be forgiving of myself when I weighed in yesterday.

Turns out it wasn’t needed.  I weighed in at 271.2 pounds.  That’s down .8 pounds from last week.  So I enjoyed the holiday with the family and still managed to go down in weight.  Something to definitely be thankful for.

This weigh in my muscle mass was 27.8%.  That’s the same as last week.  So the difference in pounds is negligible.

Body fat percentage also stayed the same as last week at 36.3%.  This, plus a little water weight, would account for the .8 pounds lost.

So while the overall results barely moved the needle, it still did move in the right direction.

I was very good about exercising and closing my rings.  I closed all three rings on 6 of the day this week.  I closed the stand and move rings every day of the week.  I missed out on closing the exercise ring once because I only did one workout on Friday.  I didn’t complete the second because that was the day my brother flew in to town.  On my days off I got three exercise sessions in each day so my average was over 30 minutes of exercise a day.

Not a lot to say about meditation.  Same smooth, but slow, progression there.  This is in regards to both quality and quantity.  It is also a good description for my improvements in mood.  Getting just a little bit better every day.

Some of that has to do with the job hunting as well.  That’s been ramped up, including going for an interview tomorrow.  Wish me luck.

This brings me to my final update, sleep quality.  I’ve noticed that I’m getting better rest.  Even on the nights I get up more often because I’ve had too many fluids during the day, I still get a good night’s sleep.  I wake up rested and ready to go.  So when I’m sleeping I must be sleeping deeper.  That no doubt is improving my mood as well.

Speaking of sleep, because I do have the interview tomorrow I’m going to keep this post short so I can get to bed.  I’m not sure if I’ll know right away if the interview was successful in getting me the job but I’ll post how I felt it went either way.  If I do get the job I’ll need to wait a day or so to post on here as I will need to notify my current employer first.  But after them you guys will get to know as well.  Hope you’re having a great day and I’ll see you soon.

Quick thought   Leave a comment

It’s easy in a moment to make a quick decision based on what’s expedient in that moment. And while that quick decision might work in the short term it can have long term repercussions. Stop and consider the long term ramifications of your choice before implementing it.

As an example, you’re tired and on the way home from an exhausting day of work. You don’t feel like cooking and you know there’s nothing meal ready at the house. In that moment it’s easy to decide to stop off at a fast food drive thru and get something quick. It’s only one meal after all. How much can that hurt?

Well, it can hurt a lot down the road. If you’re on keto, as I am, you’ve just knocked yourself out of ketosis. You’ll have to get back into it which takes time and slows progress. Also, if you’re having to tell yourself it’s ok it probably isn’t. Which means you may feel bad about yourself later. Finally, every time you take the easier route you make it that much easier to do it again later.

The decision took care of an immediate issue but created three more to deal with later. Kicking the can down the road only works for so long and then you run out of road.

It’s your decision though. You’re an adult. Make your decision and own it. But do yourself a favor and stop a moment to consider the long term ramifications of your short term decisions. Have a great day.

Quick Thought   Leave a comment

In the United States yesterday it was Thanksgiving. A day to spend being thankful for all the blessings you’ve received. Here’s the thing, you can be thankful any day, and every day. Whether you live in the U.S. or not. So why wait for that one day a year. Find things to be thankful for every day. After all you attract into your life what your mind dwells on. Have a great day.

A Quick Thank You.   5 comments

I restarted this blog on 03/28/2018 to document my keto and mindfulness journey. When I did I had assumed it would probably take a long time to gain any traction. And now, less than 8 months later, I’ve already exceeded 500 views and have 50 followers. Maybe that’s actually lower numbers than I could or should be at. Maybe they’re really good numbers. What I do know is I’m grateful for all the times people stopped by to view my blog, and I’m grateful for the 50 people who decided to come along for the journey. When I get to my first anniversary (of the restart anyway) I hope to have come farther still. Thank you for your support. Have a great day.

Made a little progress with today’s weigh in.  Last week I was 273.0 pounds.  This week I weighed in at 272.0 pounds.

For muscle mass last week I was at 27.7%.  This week it went to 27.8%.  In pounds that’s 75.6 for both.  Not a gain, but not a loss.  I’m good with that.

For body fat last week I was at 36.6%.  This week it went down to 36.3%.  In pounds that’s 99.9 last week and 98.7 this week.  So while I dropped a pound of actual weight, I lost 1.2 pounds of body fat.  So I must have put on a little water weight.

Progress was made, so that’s good.  Would have liked a little better progress but I’ll take what I can get.

Strategies for getting the ball moving faster again include kicking up the cardio.  I mainly walk which keeps using extra fat, but I want to burn faster.  So I’ve gone from using just the basic step to adding the first set of risers for it.  So now it sits 2 inches higher.  And while I do more body weight exercises, I think I’ve been doing it a little too haphazardly.  Now I intend to do them more on schedule.  That way I’m both being more consistent and more accountable to myself.

In the mindset game, positivity is paying off.  I have decided to be out of my current job and into a new job by the beginning of next year, before January is over.  I’ve been keeping a positive outlook about my chances, and I’ve just gotten positive feedback.  A coworker clued me in about a job I was completely unaware of.  It doesn’t pay as high as my current salary, but it does have benefits, and I think I’d be happy doing it.  It also strikes me as a job where I might have free time during the job to work on my writing, which is also good.  So a good lead, out of the blue, on a job that’ll pay pretty well for what I’m doing, and is located where I work now so it’s a commute I’m used to.  I’m very grateful for this lead, and my application has already been submitted.

I also realized today that I’m back to having fun at work again.  At least with a few of my coworkers.  Which shows a mindset improvement of its own.  I am where I am and will be for a few more weeks so why not make the time happy?  All the work I’ve done with meditating and positive affirmations has sure made it easier to be happier in all situations.

So to wrap things up, I’m very happy with the way things are going in my life right now.  It looks like things are only going to get better.  Stress is down and fitness/overall health is improving.  And I look pretty well set up to hit the upcoming 2019 year running.  Hope things are working out well for you, too.  Have a great day.
