Weigh In 12/10/2018   Leave a comment

Time for the weekly weigh in.  Good news this week.  As you know I actually gained a pound last week during the weigh in, and for the monthly update no less.  This week I’m happy to report that I’ve bounced back.  Last week I weighed in at 272.2 pounds.  This week I weighed in at 269.6 pounds.  So I not only lost the pound I gained last week, I lost an additional 1.6 pounds on top of that.  Sweet.  On top of that I’ve breached 270 pounds which means I’m either at, or very near, what I used to weigh in high school.

For muscle mass I was 27.7% last week and 27.9% this week.  In terms of pounds that’s 75.4 pounds last week, and 75.2 pounds this week.  Lost a little muscle possibly, but at .2 pounds that could be a measuring error.  Not too worried about it, although I’d be happier if it were definitively climbing.

For body fat I was 36.4% last week and 36.1% this week.  In terms of pounds that’s 99.1 pounds last week and 97.3 this week.  So 1.8 pounds of fat lost.  Between that and the muscle loss that still leaves about .6 pounds of weight to account for which I would assume is water weight.

So exactly three weeks from today will be December 31st.  Last day of the year and last weigh in of the year.  If I lose another 7 pounds between then and now I’ll have lost 90 pounds on the nose for the year.  7.5 pounds a month on average.  I’d be very happy with that goal.  To have lost a full 100 pounds this year I’d have to lose 17 pounds, which I don’t see happening.

Not a lot of change in my meditation or exercise routines this week other than small incremental increases.  Same with mood and mindset.  Just a little better than last week, nothing major to report.

When it comes to finances I have to admit I’ve slipped a little.  I purchased an LED salt lamp I didn’t need, I just wanted.  I justified it by telling myself that it was for creating a better ambience in the room while I meditated.  The reality is that I don’t need to create ambience, especially since I meditate with the eyes closed most of the time.  Other then that I’ve done well with spending and getting debt paid off.

YouTube is going pretty well.  Nearly at 200 views.  Excited about that.  And I’ve begun recording an extra video on Wednesday’s to put up later in the week.  Starting with the new year I’d like to make a goal of getting at least two videos up a week.  I think that by doing so my views will go up a little quicker which brings me that much closer to being monetized, which is a big goal of the channel.  The primary being to put out videos that reach people and help people.  I’d like to spend more of my time doing that and that’s why I want to monetize.  If I could make a living off of it I could devote myself full-time to it.

The book has been revised a bit, but I should be putting in a bit more time on it.  With the end of the year three weeks away I’m working under the assumption that it won’t be out for sale by end of 2018.  But it still should be out early 2019.  We’ll see how it goes.

That wraps up this weeks update.  Let me know what you think.  The final goal I’ll mention this week is doing better about getting a post up every day here.  It may just be to get a quick thought up, but I’d like something every day.  So to that end I’ll wish you a good day and plan on seeing you tomorrow.  Later.

Monthly Update with Pics   2 comments

Time now for the monthly update.  First, this week I weighed in at 272.2 pounds.  That’s a one pound gain from last week.  Not sure why that is.  My speculation is that I’ve been going a little too low-calorie and my body has slowed down my metabolism to fight back.  It would explain why I’ve been a little more tired lately.  So I will be more mindful to keep properly fueled.  For last month’s check in I was 277.2 pounds so I’m down 5 pounds on the nose for the month.

For muscle mass I was 27.7% this week, 27.8% last week, and 27.2% a month ago.  In pounds that’s 75.4 pounds for all three measurements.  So no real changes there.

For body fat I was 36.4% this week, 36.3% last week, and 37.3% a month ago.  In pounds that’s 99.1 this week, 98.4 last week, and 103.4 a month ago.  So 4.3 pounds of body fast lost in the last month.  So that’s good.  Since the beginning of the year I’ve gone from 52% body fat down to 36.4%.  Nearly 16 percentage points, about 1.5 percentage points a month.  In pounds of body fat that’s from 183.4 to 99.1, 84.3 pounds difference.  That’s a lot of fat that I gladly don’t carry around any more.

I have improved energy, mental clarity, and a way more positive outlook on life.  I just got done doing my evening workout and that was jumping rope.  I can’t do that consistently for my 15 minute workout but I couldn’t do it all when I started, so progress.  And that’s what this has been all about. Not worrying about where I was but being happy for where I’m headed.

My mental improvements are moving along steadily.  I meditate every day at least once a day.  I’m doing a lot better about catching myself being negative during the day and replacing that with positive thoughts.  Things are not bothering me like they used to.  It’s kind of weird because I still notice it, but only to think “that used to bother me.”  Do I occasionally slip and get a little upset, sure I do.  But I do a lot better about getting right back on track.

My new projects, the book and the YouTube channel, are coming along well.  Nearly at 200 total views on the YouTube channel.  The book is getting finished up.  I think it’s looking a little more like it’ll be published at the beginning of next year, but I might still be able to pull off before year’s end.  We’ll see how that goes.

All in all, with a month to go, I’m feeling comfortable calling this a great year of progress.  I can’t imagine anything that could happen between now and the end of the year to change my mind on that.  Especially since my mind is more and more wired to see things in a positive light.  With what a great year 2018 has turned out to be I can’t wait to see what 2019 has in store for me, just around the corner.

So without further delay, I will wish you all a great day and leave you with the progress pics.  Starting with the orange shirt at the top (the current photo) they go back in time as you go down thru the photos.  I think the smiles in the recent pics sums up my year.  See you soon.

New Findings About the Ketogenic Diet   Leave a comment

For this post I thought I would share a few new things they’ve discovered in the last year about the ketogenic diet.  For some of these things the science isn’t by any means settled, but research at least has been done and the results are believed to be true at this point.

The Ketogenic Diet may be anti-aging:  Researchers at the Gladstone Institute have discovered that the ketogenic diet can have the same anti-aging effects that are seen in calorie restricted diets.  The benefits in a calorie restricted diet come from the creating of β-hydroxybutyrate (βOHB).  However, the ketogenic diet is also able to create βOHB without the need for calorie restriction.  That’s because βOHB is a ketone.  The creation of βOHB helps to combat oxidative stress which helps slow the aging process.  For a more detailed explanation please consult the article below.

The Ketogenic Diet is muscle sparing:  A lot of people are under the misconception that you just can’t put on muscle with the ketogenic diet.  Not only is it possible to put on extra muscle, it’s actually more difficult to lose muscle while in ketosis.  The key to whether or not you put on the muscle is your protein intake.  So even if you’re running lower than you should on protien it’s good to know that at least this isn’t going to cause you to back track muscle wise.

The Ketogenic Diet is good for protecting the brain:  It seems that the ketogenic diet is capable of reducing beta-amyloid.  Beta-amyloid protein, when it sticks together, causes the blockages that lead to Alzheimer’s disease.  Being on the ketogenic diet helps to increase the removal of beta-amyloid proteins, leading to a better functioning brain.  Especially as it ages.

The Ketogenic Diet is good for the eyes as well:  Glaucoma is a disease where the cells that send the images to the brain become damaged, reducing the quality of your vision.  Researchers at Northeast Ohio Medical University found that maintaining a ketogenic lifestyle increased energy production to the retinal cells at the back of the eye, decreasing the chance of damage, in patients with glaucoma.

It’s important to keep in mind a lot of this is early findings.  And further research needs to be done on all four topics.  But it seems that every day we learn more about the benefits of the ketogenic diet, beyond the amazing weight loss and increased energy.

So even if you already are at a good body weight, there are many more reasons to start, and continue to live, a ketogenic lifestyle.  I’ll post more when new research comes out.  Have a great day.

Interview Results   2 comments

So I did hear back from them today.  The guy who called was not one of the ones who interviewed me.  He told me I wasn’t chosen for the job at this time.  There was some good news in it.  While I had went to the open interview based on a news blurb on a local TV station, I hadn’t really gotten a chance to look at a job listing.  So I did have some questions that I wasn’t able to ask in the format of the interview I went to.

I know the company will put out another notice for hiring soon, so this time I will get to read the notice.  The notice will hopefully answer my questions.

The other bit of good news is that while I was turned down, the guy who called did offer this information.  The ones who did interview me had told him to make sure to tell me that I should keep an eye on their Facebook page.  I should do this because they would be having another job fair/interview session soon.  They told him to pass along that I should definitely come back and interview again.

I don’t remember exactly the words the gentleman used, but I was definitely left with the impression that if I came back again the next time they were hiring, I would be getting a job.  Might be reading into it, or hearing what I want to hear, but it’s just how it sounded to me.

The big thing about the whole situation is that, while I of course would have liked to hear that I got the job, I didn’t react negatively to the news.  I accepted that I hadn’t been chosen, and that there was likely a good reason at this time for that.  I’m doing better at realizing things happen for a reason.  I don’t always get to know the reason, but there is a reason.

So I will continue to do some job hunting.  I got a new application in today.  I still have a couple of outstanding applications for jobs nearby where I already work.  So, despite today’s bad news, things feel like they’re moving in the right direction.  As I get more news on my job hunting journey I’ll post it here.  So for now, I’ll bid you a good day, and I’ll see you soon.

New YouTube Video Up   3 comments

I have a new YouTube vlog up about cheat days on the ketogenic diet.  I’d love it if you could listen to the whole video and tell me what you think.  Do you agree with me?  Do you disagree?  If so, I’d love to hear what you think.  Like and subscribe on YouTube if you’re so inclined.  Coming up this week I’m going to start doing product reviews.  I know in the past I’ve mentioned I was an Amazon Affiliate.  That isn’t the case at the moment.  These will be reviews of products I use regularly and like.  If you purchase them I make no financial gain or compensation of any kind.  I’m just telling you what I like about the product.  So without further ado, here is the video:

Weigh In 11/27/2018   Leave a comment

Sorry for the delay.  My brother is visiting from Alaska so my schedule is a little off.  But I wanted to make sure to get my weekly update on my progress posted.

This past week is of course the week that Thanksgiving occurred in.  I took my day off from keto for this month for Thanksgiving so I was prepared in advance to be forgiving of myself when I weighed in yesterday.

Turns out it wasn’t needed.  I weighed in at 271.2 pounds.  That’s down .8 pounds from last week.  So I enjoyed the holiday with the family and still managed to go down in weight.  Something to definitely be thankful for.

This weigh in my muscle mass was 27.8%.  That’s the same as last week.  So the difference in pounds is negligible.

Body fat percentage also stayed the same as last week at 36.3%.  This, plus a little water weight, would account for the .8 pounds lost.

So while the overall results barely moved the needle, it still did move in the right direction.

I was very good about exercising and closing my rings.  I closed all three rings on 6 of the day this week.  I closed the stand and move rings every day of the week.  I missed out on closing the exercise ring once because I only did one workout on Friday.  I didn’t complete the second because that was the day my brother flew in to town.  On my days off I got three exercise sessions in each day so my average was over 30 minutes of exercise a day.

Not a lot to say about meditation.  Same smooth, but slow, progression there.  This is in regards to both quality and quantity.  It is also a good description for my improvements in mood.  Getting just a little bit better every day.

Some of that has to do with the job hunting as well.  That’s been ramped up, including going for an interview tomorrow.  Wish me luck.

This brings me to my final update, sleep quality.  I’ve noticed that I’m getting better rest.  Even on the nights I get up more often because I’ve had too many fluids during the day, I still get a good night’s sleep.  I wake up rested and ready to go.  So when I’m sleeping I must be sleeping deeper.  That no doubt is improving my mood as well.

Speaking of sleep, because I do have the interview tomorrow I’m going to keep this post short so I can get to bed.  I’m not sure if I’ll know right away if the interview was successful in getting me the job but I’ll post how I felt it went either way.  If I do get the job I’ll need to wait a day or so to post on here as I will need to notify my current employer first.  But after them you guys will get to know as well.  Hope you’re having a great day and I’ll see you soon.
